Modeling of Alternative Lagoon Closure Plans at Oil Refineries, Illinois and Missouri
HydroAnalysis developed and applied ground-water contaminant transport models to
evaluate the environmental risks associated with alternative closure plans for inactive
oil wastewater and sludge lagoons. Clients: Major oil companies through subcontract
with Charles A. Menzie & Associates.
Modeling of Manufactured Gas Plant Sites, Michigan, Indiana and New Hampshire
HydroAnalysis assisted in the development of site investigation work plans and site
data analysis for former MGP sites. A two-dimensional vertical model of ground-water
contaminant transport for the site and near-site area was developed to evaluate the
potential transport of dissolved-phase constituents. Client: Utility clients through
subcontracts with engineering firms.
Ground-Water Extraction and Treatment Systems, Petroleum Pipelines
HydroAnalysis has designed interception wells for capture and control of contaminated
ground water at oil pipeline terminals in NJ, SC, and NC. A ground-water streamline
and capture zone model developed by HydroAnalysis was used to determine the location,
pumping rates, and design of ground-water extraction wells. Client: Major oil pipeline
company through subcontracts with The Paulding Company.
Site Assessment, Gasoline Service Station, Wilmington, Massachusetts
HydroAnalysis was retained as a consultant to “trouble-shoot” a gasoline service
station site investigation complicated by the presence of chlorinated organic chemicals.
Dr. Shanahan analyzed the available data, developed a conceptual model that attributed
the chlorinated solvents to an off-site source, and designed a field sampling program
utilizing drive-point sample technology to confirm the conceptual model. The result
was a successful demonstration to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
that an off-site source was responsible for the solvent contamination. Client: Major
oil company through subcontract with dsEnvironmental, Inc.
Expert Consulting for Litigation, Verona Wells Superfund Site, Michigan
HydroAnalysis provided attorney with technical review and interpretation on issues
related to ground-water flow and water quality at contaminated municipal supply wells.
HydroAnalysis provided technical analysis of the extent and character of ground-water
contamination and historical contaminant travel times and directions. Client: Law
